“Dealing With” Adoptees: Exploring Mental Health Practices that Reinforce Dominant Cultural Myths of Adoption
Join us on September 13
Live, virtual training. Session will be recorded. ALL registrants will receive a time-limited recording of the training, PDF of training, and Certificate of Attendance, even if you register and cannot attend.
This presentation explores clinical paradigms and other professional tools used to address the needs of adoptees and their families, including therapy and psychiatry, that enforce dominant cultural myths about adoption. For example, adopted and fostered youth often find themselves perpetually infantilized and pathologized unfairly by targeted interventions that misunderstand their adoptive identity and developmentally appropriate psychosocial needs. The presenters highlight observations from their clinical practice while attending to ethical considerations as adoptee activists advocating publicly for the needs of the adoptees and families for whom they hold space within the privacy of the therapy room.
